College athletics, particularly basketball and football, are a big source of pride for alumni. Large college sporting events are a great opportunity for alumni associations to galvanize their audiences, and it doesn’t get any bigger than March Madness.

The 2016 NCAA basketball tournament lived up to the hype, delivering bracket-busting upsets, Cinderella runs and last-second game-winning shots. Below are five universities that got March Madness right on their alumni association Facebook pages:

1. Syracuse University: Best Overall

The Orange had a Cinderella run in this year’s tournament, and the Facebook alumni page followed the team’s success every step of the way. To its credit, the Syracuse University alumni association went above and beyond to optimize its use of Facebook during March Madness, launching and effectively promoting a creative hashtag, #IBleedOrange, using images and hosting a landing page.

The alumni association also made good use of Facebook’s new live video streaming feature to deliver followers a more intimate experience. The school broadcasted pep rallies, game action and more. The page also featured great videos, vivid images and event invitations.

2.VCU: Fan Videos and Pictures

The Rams’ alumni page offers a personal touch with fan videos and pictures from alumni pep rallies, pregame events and viewing parties. The use of the ram emoji is an added bonus and a nice touch! VCU’s page also offers information on regional alumni events for tourney games.

3.Indiana University: Facebook Page Covers

The Hoosiers’ alumni page made great use of an often underutilized Facebook feature to promote school spirit during march madness: the cover image. The school consistently updated the image to support both the men’s and women’s teams. The cover images were even customized in some cases to reflect the round and opponent. The IU alumni association also did a nice job of posting videos and fan pictures as well as putting up articles that put the school’s rich basketball history on display.

4.Villanova University: Fundraising Offer

The Wildcats’ alumni Facebook page did a nice job of promoting alumni viewing parties and offering game recaps. It also featured a clever March Madness-focused hashtag: ‪#‎LetsMarchNova.

The school used the excitement around the basketball team to tie in a sports-themed school fundraising offer. Alumni donating $10 or more received a Let’s Go Nova koozie for use with their game-time beverage of choice.

5.Iowa State: Blogging

The Cyclones’ alumni association has a great blog that it updates frequently and promotes on its Facebook page. During March Madness, the school did a nice job of creating blog content to document its team’s run through the tournament. The blog posts provided alumni with game recaps, quotes, fun team pictures and valuable ticket and travel information.
