As part of its Alumni Monitor service, Corporate Insight publishes a quarterly analysis of comprehensive university giving campaigns gathered through our proprietary campaign data tracking system. The Campaign Tracker offers an in-depth view of how higher education institutions are progressing toward their stated fundraising goals and highlights the tools, outreach efforts and solicitations that have proven successful. Let’s look at some of the most notable moments of Q4 2017:

Tufts University and UNC- Chapel Hill launched the public phases of their capital campaigns, and two universities—Georgetown and Berkley—started their quiet phases in Q4. New York University, Northeastern University and University of San Diego completed their capital campaigns, but NYU and San Diego have yet to release their results. Most notably, Northeastern raised $1.4 billion from 106,000 donors, surpassing its $1.25 billion goal by 12%. Our tracker also indicates that Indiana University extended its For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign by $500 million to a new total goal of $3 billion and lengthened the duration by six months, with a new end date of June 2020. Out of our 28 currently active campaigns (as of December 31, 2017):

  • 39% of active campaigns have reached $2 billion or more
    • Four universities—Chicago, Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Michigan—raised at least $4 billion
  • 23 schools are more than halfway to their goals
    • 12 are at or above 90% completion, with Davidson College achieving 91% completion most recently
    • Harvard and Villanova have already surpassed their goals by at least 18%, while Michigan and Washington University in St. Louis topped their goals by at least 8%
    • Johns Hopkins exceeded its goal by 4%
